Depressiooni fetiš

Praegust majanduskriisi on hakatud võrdlema Suure Depressiooniga 1930. aastatel -
hiljuti reprodutseeriti meil ajakirjanduses koguni Dorothea Lange ikooniks muutunud foto muremõtteis emast ("Migrant Mother").
Siinne vähem tuntud foto ("Mended stockings", 1934) on heaks näiteks, kuidas ka nii-öelda dokumentaalfoto on alati "lavastamine" (valguse ja varju tähenduslik kontrast) ja kujundiloome (osa terviku asemel).

(Best known for her enigmatic photographs of migrant workers and destitute families during the Depression, Dorothea Lange's arresting images will remain with you once you've seen them. This salient 1934 photo of mended stockings on young feminine legs tells an entire story in one instance. Her shadows and the parts of the subject that she does not show are certainly as important as the picture you see.)
